A year long pilot program in four California schools will place 400 iPads in the hands of middle school students. Publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt worked with Apple to develop the app called “HMH Fuse: Algebra 1” for the program. The math app essentially replaces the 800 page algebra textbook students would normally use. A research firm will conduct a study of the project, comparing the performance of the students using the iPads with similar groups using the traditional textbook. Results will be published in fall 2011.
