Apple’s iTunes 11 offers a number of improvements. It also comes with a feature that may be confusing. When you start up iTunes 11 on your computer, you’ll notice the sidebar is missing. This is the column on the left where your library, the store, connected devices and playlists should be.

You can restore the view of this sidebar from the iTunes program menu.
Select View > Show Sidebar

Having this sidebar displayed will make it easier to manage the media on your your iPad.
