I recently led an introductory iPad workshop for Communication Sciences and Disorders faculty at a local university. One of the resources I prepared for them was a list of iPad apps that might be useful in classes with the department’s students or in the clinic with the children they serve. Many of these apps also have versions for the iPhone and iPod touch device.
I compiled this list from a number of websites and articles I reviewed. These are not presented in any particular order. Those working directly with the children – teachers, clinicians, parents and other caregivers – can best judge which of these apps are most appropriate to meet a particular child’s needs.
UPDATE: I’ve added a PDF file you can download at the end of the list. The file gives the app name, a brief description, price and live URL link for each app.

It has always been the case that a communication system can only be as good as the words it contains. I suggest taking a look at Touchchat. It is an app designed by AAC professionals that offers many features not available in any other AAC ipad software. But more importantly it offer the chance to purchase professionally made vocabularies like Wordpower or Essence that can be loaded into the communication software.
I agree with Paul that the TouchChat app is a great app by allowing a variety of vocabulary items such as using pictures or text to speech and it allows visual scenes to program photos. It definitely gives the consumer a variety of options.
Check out this short video about using ipods as AAC devices.
